One such format is the Leporello. But why is this accordion-like object so valuable, especially when it comes to inclusion?

The name "Leporello" has a curious, theatrical origin. It derives from the character of the same name in Mozart's Don Giovanni. In the opera, Leporello is the protagonist's servant and keeps a meticulous inventory of his master's amorous conquests.

To show Donna Elvira the endless list, Leporello unrolls a very long list that, dramatically, folds out like an accordion. From there, the character's name came to refer to this specific format: a single strip of paper, cardboard, or other material, folded over itself several times.

Unlike traditional books, the Leporello breaks the barrier of "turning the page." This feature transforms the reading experience into a continuous visual and narrative flow: without pauses, the story unfolds gradually and can be read at one's own pace.

It's the perfect format for depicting timelines, journeys, panoramas, or transformations (such as the life cycle of a plant or a geographical adventure). The Leporello allows you to connect scenes that in a traditional book would be physically separated by the edge of the page, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the story.

The leporello in the pictomix project: a solution for everyone

For the Pictomix project , the Leporello is not just an aesthetic choice, but a real functional solution aimed at breaking down barriers to reading.

Motor Accessibility

Its natural rigidity and the ability to be unfolded in a single movement make it extremely easier to handle for people with motor disabilities, who often find it difficult to manipulate the thin pages of a common book.

Low Vision and Blindness

The stylistic choice of simple images with good visual and color contrast is specifically designed for the visually impaired. Furthermore, the Leporello allows for seamless tactile textures or Braille text. This allows the fingers to glide fluidly through the entire narrative, preventing the reader from having to interrupt their exploration to find the beginning of the next page.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

The orderly scanning of panels is ideal for AAC, as it allows you to organize symbols and images in a clean, predictable layout that is easily readable by anyone.

Sign Language and Inclusion for Deaf Readers

Finally, for readers who are deaf or have communication or language difficulties, the Leporello offers constant visual support. The ability to see the entire narrative sequence open before them facilitates the contextualization of symbols and concepts, making the narrative of mythology (as in the case of our Ulysses) an immersive and immediate experience.

Training at the Turin Institute for the Deaf about Ulysses Leporello

Bibliography and webography

https://unaparolaalgiorno.it/significato/leporello

https://www.grafichecelori.com/leporello-il-formato-perfetto-per-raccontare-una-storia/

Encyclopedia Britannica.
